Effective Literature Searching for Researchers

Whether you’re looking to sharpen your search terms, conduct a systematic search, or get advice on where to begin a literature review, this workshop can help!

In this interactive session you will learn the ins and outs of literature searching and apply them to your own research question. The goal of the workshop is to help you build a search strategy for your current project, while also providing you with tools you can apply to any future literature search. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to get extensive feedback on your search strategy.

This workshop is aimed at PhDs and other researchers in the social sciences.

In this workshop, you will learn about:

  • Translating your research question into a search query
  • Types of literature review (e.g., systematic review, scoping review, umbrella review)
  • Selecting academic databases and other resources to search
  • Building and documenting a reproducible search strategy (structure, search terms, syntax)
  • Incorporating other advanced search techniques into your strategy (citation, reference chaining, journal search, hand searching, grey literature)

Preparation: Please come with a research question in mind and choose a few key articles on that address your research question.
