Workshop 1 NSM Library - Efficiently searching for literature in academic databases

Part 1– efficiently search for literature in academic databases

Only available for (external) PhD students at the Nijmegen School of Management.

The set-up of the first meeting will be a practical one. This means that you can start searching for literature for your own research. The NSM Library Team will help you during the workshop to search more efficiently in Web of Science, RUQuest, and EBSCO databases, such as Business Source Complete, EconLit, or Greenfile. After the meeting you know how to use different search techniques and basic search strategies.

Preparation

Preparation time approximate 1.5-2 hours

Try to find literature about your research topic. Record your search activities including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used and publications found. The search tracker will help you to list up your search steps. Fill-in the 3 tabs of the search tracker (search terms, search history and publications) for one of your sub questions.

  • Write down your sub question and mark the key concepts. Formulate search terms for each key concept (Tab: Organize your search terms).
  • Trace your search (Tab: search history). Fill in your combination of search terms (search query), the databases, search options and search filters you have used. Note the number of results. Adapt your search query if necessary.
  • Select the most relevant publications (Tab: relevant publications): You need at least two publications.

During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to efficient search techniques and strategies.
