Workshop 2 for PhD students: literature search for a (systematic) review

Second meeting – literature search for a (systematic) review, Room EOS 01.350

Only available for (external) PhD students at the Nijmegen School of Management.

During the second meeting, the NSM Library Team will provide you with more theoretical background on systematic searching and systematic reviews. After the meeting you know how to set up a systematic search. We strongly advise you to also join the first meeting (October 12th) if you want to participate in the second meeting.

 

Preparation

Preparation time approximate 1.5-2 hours

  1. Search for systematic reviews about your own research topic.
  • Try to use the different search techniques and strategies you have learned during the first meeting.
  • Record your search activities including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used and publications found. The search tracker will help you to list up your search steps.
  • Select at least one systematic review.

 

  1. Try to evaluate on the process of conducting a systematic review.
  • Locate the following article: Carbonell, K. B., Stalmeijer, R. E., Könings, K. D., Segers, M., & van Merriënboer, J. J. (2014). How experts deal with novel situations: A review of adaptive expertise. Educational Research Review, 12, 14-29. Download the full text.
  • Read the method section of the article. Identify the elements of a systematic review mentioned in the method section.
  • Read the method section of the systematic review you have found (preparation 1) and identify the steps of the review process.
  • Evaluate the steps of the two articles. What are the similarities? What are the differences
